Wolverhampton Street Community
A Memory of Dudley.
Wolverhampton Street seemed to almost be a village on its own. There was Burgins and Bytherways newagents, Masseys wet fish shop, Davis's grocers, Smiths greengrocers, Sherratts electrical, Bryans diy, Robinsons cakes, Abrhams cobblers, Hoffs and Falcon furniture shops, Wainwrights bike shop, Edwards butchers, Parkes electrical repairs and Piolis ice cream shop and cafe and hairdressers, Shelleys and Ackroyds chemists, Davenports beers and the West End public house to name a few. Other shops I remember but forgot their names... a haberdashery on the corner of the Belper, and another sweet shop and wet fish shop and book shop by Wainwrights bikes, and a wool shop towards Eve Hill...There was also Bays pop factory and Midlands Counties dairyand Fosters haulage offices. Although the main garage for Foster brothers was in Stafford Street and was run by my dad Gerald and his brother George where they ran up to 15 articulated lorries. Does anyone else remember this little community?
