Dorking, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
Dorking's High Street is a most attractive one, but nowadays it is considerably more traffic-choked than it was in the 1950s. A good piece of townscape, the street both winds and undulates; there are many good buildings, such as the White Horse Hotel on the right. Woolworth's was rebuilt not long after this view was taken; in the process Richard Hicks shop next door was demolished, and all was replaced by a pallid neo- Georgian two-storey building.
