More about this scene
There have been race meetings in Doncaster since 1600, but it was the St Leger of 1776 that put the town on the racing calendar. The race was named after a neighbour of Lord Rockingham, Lt Gen Anthony St Leger. Rockingham commissioned the building of the grandstand in 1778; it was a copy of John Carr's original stand at the York Knavesmire course. A new grandstand opened in 1970.
