Broad Street School

A Memory of Crewe.

I too, went to the Nursery School on Broad Street. I remember Miss Massey who slammed the desk down on my fingers squashing my signet ring, which resulted in my finger swelling and the ring having to be cut off! Such a nice lady to be teaching five year olds.... After the nursery we went to the infants school on Broad Street with Miss Cotton as our Headmistress. Then, for the first year of junior school we were in a railway carriage behind the chapel on North Street with Miss Kruger as our teacher. Afterwards, it was up to the junior school with Mr Foden, who I remember as a tall grey man, in grey suits. There was a welsh student teacher called Edward Gwyn Howells that we ten year old girls had a crush on, and I remember Mr Foden giving us a ticking off about it!
There was a brickyard pit opposite the school (it had been my great great grandfather's) and we would get into trouble because we used to paddle in it and catch sticklebacks. Summer holidays were great, we had such freedom in those days - I was in a gang and we would often walk all the way to Minshull canal with the oldest of us probably being ten. (Lynn Evans)

I used to live by the brickyard pit at Midfield Farm and also went to the schools you mentioned.
The School a Broad Street is now run as a charity and has a community cafe and all sorts of activities for the local commu nity. We get lots of old pupils who come in and walk round the site bringing back memories.
I would be keen to meet to compile a history of the School and would welcome the opportunity to meet with people who have memories of their time in Broad Street. Anyone interested can contact me at this e mail or call me on (01270) 255355

I remember all the schools mentioned and the teachers. Somewhere I've still got the school photo with Miss Cotton. I'm sure I was lucky to be in the schoolroom at North Street and remember Mr Foden. We used to have classical records (78 rpm) before assembly and I think his favourite was Fingle's Cave because we seemed to have it often. I has always stuck with me and I visited Staffa last year to peer into Fingal's Cave and here the rush of the waves like the music as he told us.
In retirement I attempt pen and wash drawings and would love to have an old picture of the nursery, old primary and junior school buildings to draw a personal memory of what for me were happy school days.
Am looking on any information regarding a murder in the late 1960s at broad Street school I'd be grateful for any information you can get me on Facebook kirby hannah Hart or email kirbyillona@Gmail. com
I went to Broad St in late 40s and early 50s. I remember Mr Finch who always had a bubbling put of glue in his classroom. I remember Mr ( Squasher ) Barnett, Miss Watkins, Miss Rawsthorne, Mr Foden. Mr Norgain head with his tiny Austin 7.
