Seven miles from the Humber and to the west of Hull, Cottingham was another desirable place to live for prosperous merchants; in the 18th century there were five magnificent houses here, which were all lost between 1936 and 1972. Edward, the Black Prince, once used the manor house. During the 19th century a number of Dutch farmers settled here, which might explain some of the architecture we see here along King Street. The Duke of Cumberland on Market Green and the Tiger Inn at the end of the street remain, but the small shops are now dominated by estate agents. Cultural figures from the town include Winifred Holtby, Brian Rix and Alan Plater.
