Corfe Mullen stands on the alluvial flood plain of the River Stour, surrounded originally by the wild heathlands of south-east Dorset. Until well into the 20th century the nearby river would overflow the fields to the north of the village in a flood up to a mile wide. The parish church often stood just a road's width from the limit of the rising waters.

My parents thatched cottage in Haywards Lane when they purchased it in 1950, had over 27 acres of land and previous to them owning it and starting to farm the land it was owned by a Miss Wadlow and her sisters, they were quite a well off family, having a car and people working for them. In the 50's there was a clay mine,as opposed to an open pit, which was in Candy's Lane. The clay was loaded into railway wagons an taken by rail to a siding in the old Carters works on the Backwater side of the Blandford road.
