From 1955 1964

A Memory of Colindale.

My family moved to Sheaveshill Court in 1955, Ivy & George Casbard my brother George and myself.
I attended Colindale Primary School until 1964.
It was wonderful living opposite the shops, there was always something interesting to see when looking out of the window.
I remember Florrie who owned the sweet shop, bless him, he was a little grumpy with us kiddies.
Maxwells the sweet shop a little further up the road.
Jack The Grocer.
Hobsons Clothes Shop.
The butcher who had a candlestick telephone (old fashioned even back then).
The pet shop where to the amusement of us kids a monkey had escaped it's cage and caused absolute havoc in the shop.
Charlie and Nell who ran the green grocers.
Williams food store (sawdust on the tiles).
Bijou The Dryer Cleaners.
The Old Sainsburys oh and so many more.
Firework Night was a huge event and we spent weeks collecting things for our huge bonfire which was lit by Roy, one of the neighbours.
Wonderful, wonderful memories.

My husband and I were only talking about Florrie in the sweet shop last week! We used to by flakes from him every week. Just up the road from him was an estate agents, I think called Wilson and we tried to get a mortgage from him and he said we had no chance and our best bet was to put our name in the council housing list. In the end we managed to buy, with help from my parents, 2 Manor Way.
