More about this scene
There was a church on this site in 1122. In 1828 the present church of St Mary Magdalene replaced a small medieval building. The spire was added in the 1840s. It caused concern when it appeared to be twisting, but this flaw was corrected in 1969. In May 1979 a fire at the parish church caused £300,000 worth of damage, and restoration took place. Double glazing for the clerestory windows was installed, and the organ was rebuilt by George Sixsmith.
