More about this scene

The large building on the corner, No 14, was occupied by Tilley & Culverwell. No 16, next door, was occupied from the 1890s until 1916 by Wheelers, who specialised in selling Goss ware as souvenirs of visits to Chippenham. In 1939 Miss M Brown set up a massage and electrical treatment business, which was taken over in 1950 by Miss Gwilliam. In c1970 Lucinda operated a wool shop, the shop is now Pembroke Photography.

1976 Heatwave
Final year at school and spent most of may and June at the pool while waiting for our results. Cycled from Christian malford to get there.

Bussing To The Grammar
I fondly recall my days as a late 1950's pupil at the Grammar School on its hill. A bus service was used to ferry pupils like me from the more distant parts of the county. We had a mixed attendance and the headmaster was still Sidney Farrar. Wartime At The Grammar School
I was in the first intake of the newly built Chippenham Grammar School. When we arrived for our first day there were no chairs, as war had just been declared and all transport had been commandeered for the movement of troops. Chippenham Grammar School
Chippenham Grammar School in wartime, way up on the Malmesbury Road, was a great place to be, despite inevitable privations. Textbooks were in short supply, exercise books were rationed, and some of the teachers were away in the armed forces, but it was a happy place, with 400 pupils and a splendid Head, Sidney Farrar, supported by an excellent staff, some of whom were university teachers on loan. ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
