Sir Richard Scope's formidable 14th-century castle at Castle Bolton commands extensive views over his estates in lower Wensleydale, as this view from the castle walls shows. Although it was slighted by Cromwell's forces after a year-long siege in 1644-45, the substantial ruins are still impressive, and open to the public.
