More about this scene
The Lloyds Bank building (right), originally a pair of attached houses, was built about 1870 before the decorative façade was added in two stages. To the left is Henly's Store, established in 1810. Don Lovelock remembers going in to buy loose biscuits weighed out from the tin and the assistant breaking a piece off to make it up to a pound. They also had an overhead cable system for the cash to be sent to a central point. The shop was demolished along with the gardens as part of the road widening scheme.
