More about this scene
Between the Conservative Club building and the stuccoed, wisteria-clad cottages at the Falconer Road end of the High Street, rises the Coronation Arch marking the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. It followed in the tradition of two earlier arches, also designed by the eighty-year-old local artist Lucy Kemp-Welch, for the 1937 Silver Jubilee of George V and the Coronation of George VI in 1937. This arch was floodlit at night, and stood from June until October, when the materials were then re-utilised in the building of a Scout hut in nearby Little Bushey Lane.
