More about this scene
Built in 1856, the church has the crossed keys of St Peter below the east window. Behind the church are the hospital of 1826 and the birthplace of the Victorian novelist Ouida (1839-1907). A monument to her stands at the junction of Westgate Street and Vinery Road. In the distance is the Thingoe Union workhouse of 1836, which also served Bury after 1884. The workhouse closed in 1929 and eventually became St Mary's geriatric hospital until 1977.
