More about this scene
Burton Bridge was once one of only a handful of crossing points over the Trent River, and consequently the town was of some strategic importance. In 1322 Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, rebelled against the authority of Edward II and occupied the bridge. However, the King's troops forced their way across and the Earl fled, but not before setting fire to the town.
