More about this scene
St Swithun's Parish Church at Allington, now in the north-west corner of the extended Bridport borough, was consecrated in 1827 to replace the original medieval church to the west of the Vicarage, in what is now Parsonage Road. The new church was designed by Charles Wallis of Dorchester to a neo-Georgian design with a Doric portico of Tuscan columns supporting the architrave, triglyphic frieze, pediment and tympanum. The circular bell cupola has louvered openings on a square base and is topped by an elliptical domed roof. Inside it is what was known as preaching church, with clergy and congregation sharing the same space, rather than the former carrying out their rituals in a segregated chancel.
