More about this scene
The mile post on the former green was set up by the Turnpike Trust in the 18th century for travellers using the new turnpike roads. The limestone obelisk has a ball finial and is mounted on a square base. The south-east face has a hand pointing 'To Thrapston' and 'To Huntingdon', and the south-west face has a hand pointing 'To London'. The Royal Oak is in a good position to attract customers from the turnpike.
