More about this scene
Boroughbridge dates back to Norman times, when a bridge was constructed over the River Ure. In 1322 the Earl of Lancaster sought refuge in the local church following his defeat by Edward II. The unfortunate earl was taken prisoner and carted off to his own castle at Pontefract, where he was beheaded. Boroughbridge probably saw its best days when it was a coaching town for traffic on the Great North Road, and had no less than twenty-two inns.
