More about this scene
The substantial building behind the trees is Billericay church, which was rebuilt in 1780, though retaining its fine 15th-century brick tower. Goodspeeds ('Best Buy: Fine Fat English Plaice 2/2 a lb') was originally part of The Chequers Inn, the bulk of which lies just outside our picture, to the left. The half-timbered house dates from c1450.
