Beeston, The Castle, From The South West 1888

More about this scene
With the ivy all removed it is now much easier to see the castle, even if in doing so it has lost some of its romantic appeal. Built around 1220, the castle is perhaps best known for the treasure that was supposedly hidden here by Richard II in 1399 on his way to Ireland. On his return he was captured by the forces of the future Henry IV, and met his death in Pontefract Castle soon afterwards. Searches have been made, but nothing has ever been found!
