Bedford, The Embankment 1921

More about this scene
Several of Frith's 1921 views of the river have the same river launch loitering in the foreground (compare with 70432, 70435 and 81732, a return visit by the same photographer in 1929?). In this view, taken from the bridge, the trees obscure the tall two- gabled building of 1885 beyond the Swan Hotel. It was built as the Town and Country Club by the architect Henry Cheers; it later became the County Library, before disappearing in the 1950s to make way for additions to the hotel.
