Bedale is also just off the A1 and on the route into Wensleydale from Leeming Bar. This view of a virtually deserted Emgate shows a street of sturdy 18th- and 19th-century houses leading up to the Royal Hotel at the top of the hill. A pram is parked outside W Eden (right), the boot dealer and repairer.
