This view shows a virtually-deserted Market Place at Bawtry, with a 'half-timbered' Morris Minor prominently parked by the old Buttercross. Bawtry was once an important coaching stop on the old Great North Road, where horses were changed on the journey north to Scotland. It had also been an important port on the River Idle since Roman times, linking to the Humber.

I was born in 1963 in bawtry and until a year ago my mum still lived there. I grew up there with many happy memories. I loved looking at at these photos, some of the shops are still the same only different names. Our neighbors owned Herrings and we used to go and buy fresh yeast and coffee in there, it used to sell everything. The high street looks so empty very different to how it is now. I used to sit in the window seat ,very excited as i waited for the 6-30pm bus to arrive from Bircotes hoping it would stop across the road.Hopefully the first person off the bus would be my boyfriend John.
He would join me in the Wimpy Bar and here we would drink cokes and listen to the juke box until the 9pm curfew when i had to be home,or else !!
Those magic nights bring back fond memories of young love ,which turned into an everlasting love as we approach our 48th wedding anniversary.
I was thrilled to see your photo of the market including Cross House Stores (the building on the far right of the picture). We lived there in 1955 for about 2 years. The front was a wine and spirits store that my father managed. I lived here on the RAF camp in a Nissen hut married quarters. I had my first baby in Worksop Hospital. I used to walk from the camp down to the village to collect my weekly RAF wife's allowance further along the road and then pushing the pram would park it outside of the bakers on the small parade of shops on the right. Opposite was the church where my son was christened.
