More about this scene
This is a detailed look at the station. To the right, a London & South Western Railway meat van waits to collect meat from the slaughterhouse (centre left). Shapland & Petters works is now built, served by rail from the Ilfracombe line behind the new houses (left). The 'chemical manure' factory has acquired a chimney. The furniture van (extreme left) is intriguing. The name 'Gillows' is the famous Lancaster furniture maker. Clearly, in pre-road transport days, it had not come from there by road, but it would have been carried to Barnstaple by rail on a special low 'road vehicle truck'. A local agent, collecting from the goods yard? Or even collecting sub-contract work from Shapland & Petter?
