More about this scene
We are on the navigable River Ouse and an old Roman road. The flint-built church of St Mary is over-restored, with little of the original remaining. Court House is an altered 15th-century hall-house. The picture shows the village sign and a modern road sign. All road signs were removed during World War Two to confuse invaders. They were replaced soon after the war finished, in time for the great expansion in post-war tourism.
