Forgotten Anerley

A Memory of Anerley.

Forget Penge, forget Sydenham, forget Crystal Palace, Anerley had the Town Hall.

Centre of the Council Employment.

Opposite on the north side of Anerley Road, on the railway bridge, were two kiosk shops which my earliest memory, about 1945, were sales offices by fuel merchants. Later they transmogrified into Estate Agents, as have so many High St retail addresses,

On the Station Rd side it was Eastman & Dennis, but on the Ridsdale side was another vulture company whose name escapes me at present.

When were the disgusting inhabitants of the old Workhouse finally removed?

As a young man growing up by Anerley Station I was subjected to what now would reportable remarks of a suggestive nature. What my sisters endured I have never ascertained.

I too have very fond memories of Anerley. The Kiosk opposite the Eastman and Dennis Estate Agent used to be the Welfare Office where our Mum was able to get Orange Juice and Cod Lover Oil for us children, We had a ration Book for this. I too remember the Cash being put into a little container and wizzing across the Co-op to the cashiers little office, then it came back with the change in. We had a co-op number that we used for some reason I cant remember. Also we bought sugar which was put into a blue bag and the butter was cut from a block and put between two sheets of grease proof paper.
