More about this scene
The churchyard to the west of the church is framed on three sides by remarkable and complete sets of almshouses. Long Alley, the oldest, established by the local merchants' Fraternity of the Holy Cross in 1446, was re-founded in 1553 as Christ's Hospital. Brick Alley almshouses nearby were taken over at that time and rebuilt in 1718-20. The almshouse set was completed by Twitty's Almshouses on the north side of the churchyard, founded in 1707. This view was taken in the rear garden of Long Alley Almshouses with their tall chimneys and 1707 cupola lantern.
