More about this scene
York Minster was undergoing repairs at the time of this photograph. Pollution, mainly from the smoke from the railway, did a lot of damage to both glass and stone. Also, between 1829 and 1984 there were three fires; the first was caused deliberately, the second by a careless workman, and the third by lightning. All three caused damage and loss, and much restoration has had to be carried out.
