More about this scene
New Road was part of an old turnpike road, where a wagon drawn by five horses was charged 1/6d. In the mid 19th century, there were over twenty-five mills working in the town, but the boom and bust years of trade protection caused much unemployment. This former agricultural village gave way to rows and rows of workers' cottages, many of which remain. Nearby Yeadon Airport began as the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club in 1933, and in the Second World War it was used as a test site for Lancaster bombers. Jet planes arrived in 1984.
