I have lived in Canada now for fifty two years and manage to return to Wombwell to meet old acquaintences. My childhood started in Womwell in 1943, first going to Park Street School and then on to the Modern School. I too danced at the Baths Hall with my brother and sister. Can anyone tell me when the Black Bull and the Cross Keys got pulled down to make way for the Roundabout and junctions of Kendry, Ardsley, Wombwell and Lundwood. It was at the Cross Keys where my wife and I, had our reception, where we'd also spend a few hours within the Black Bull. Born in York Street, moved to Rimmington Road. I had friends at Barnley Road Primary, St Johns Junior and Barnley Road Methodist and the Brownies there. Its interesting to hear about the new school that will combine Wombwell High school and Darfield Foulston which will open its doors to students in September. The name will be Netherwood, the Advanced Learning Centre.The school is located off Pitt Street, Wombwell, on the site of the Netherwwod County Park.
It will be a sad day for some of us to see the old Secondary Modern/High school grounded no more on the horizon of the hilly fields.

I was born at no 3 Melville St in 1947 - which is long gone but not forgotten. The row of houses used to be opposite a butchers factory with a large store adjoining High St. My grandfather used to keep pigs in the garden across the road and every year or so used to kill one - and the whole row, no 3 to 12 were involved in this process - everyone used to get a share. George Dodds, my grandfather, was manager of Corton Wood Colliery, any info of his life and where he lived at 3 Chapel Avenue would be appreciated.
I live on Melville Street and would appreciate any photos of it or any streets nearby. Even the part of the High Street at the bottom of it. I want to know what it used to look like. Thanks.
I was born in 1936 at Concrete Cottages - Brampton. I would appreciate any photos of these old miners' cottages. My sister Margaret died there at the tender age of 10 years. My father was a miner at Darfield Main, we moved to Rother Street when I was 5 years old. I was born in Wombwell, and lived near Woods glass works, which was built at the side of the canal about 200 yard west of Station Lane. Although I lived there many years I do not have a photo of the old glass works, and the 4 cottages at the side of the works. I would greatly appreciate if someone had a photo, and be grateful if I could have a copy, or let me know where I would buy a copy.
