More about this scene
This pier was known as the Commercial or Pleasure Pier, to distinguish it from the town's old harbour pier. The pier pictured here dates from 1840; a new passenger landing stage was built in 1888-89 for the Great Western Railway. A Pavilion Theatre was constructed in 1908.
