More about this scene
A lone vehicle heads towards Warrington town centre down the new Wilderspool Bridge. Opened in May 1957 by Alderman Marshall, the flyover bridge replaced the Wilderspool railway crossing, a bottleneck on the main A49 highway. Bishop's Wharf can be seen behind the half-timbered buildings on Knutsford Road (right). These canal carriers and warehousemen offered a 'regular service between Warrington and Liverpool by fleet of new-built steel barges'. 'Specialists in the handling of hides and tanning materials', they supplied numerous Warrington tanneries, especially at Howley. Today Bishop's Wharf is the site of the Riverside Retail Park, and the tanneries are gone.
