St Pauls Cray And Grays Farm School

A Memory of St Paul's Cray.

I lived in Broomwood Road from when I was born in 1954 until 1965 and went to Grays Farm Infants and Grays Farm Primary - Happy Days! Teachers I remember are Mrs Tuffley (infants) and Mr Rigg (Primary). I remember sitting outside the Broomwood Pub with a packet of crisps, the milkman Fred Plum coming round with his horse and milk cart and the rag & bone man and his horse & cart - my nan used to give me a bag of rags to take to the rag & bone man and he used to give a cup and saucer or something bizarre in exchange! A treat from the fish shop in Cotmandene Crescent was a packet of smiths crisps from a big jar that had a screw of salt in it ! I bought my first pair of kitten heel shoes from Curtess Shoes for 9 shillings of my christmas money ! I had family, the Macdonalds, at 53 Dawson Avenue which I remember being resurfaced from cobbles to tarmac! I haven't been back for years and expect it has all changed.

I first lived in Whippendale Road and went to Grays Farm. I too remember Ms Tuffley with her pudding basin hair cut and Fred Plum who worked with my dad for Express Dairy. We moved to St Paul's Wood Hill and from St Paul's Wood Hill Junior school I went to Midfield Secondary Modern. Teachers included Messrs Sneddon, Lewis, Davies, Buxton, Goldsmith, Turnbull, Seddon, Lambert, Tonge and Greaves. I used to go to Saturday morning pictures at the community centre in Mickleham Road and to the youth club in Midfield Way. Remember Goddingtons the mens outfitters always had a sale that went through the year. Lost count of tyhe goldfish from the rag and bone man. And then there was the pink paraffin man and on Saturdays I used to sell the Star and Standard with the classified results. Made the mistake of going back about 5 years ago and Cotmandene was full of pound/budget shops
Hello bpugh, I lived in Whippendell Way from 1948 to 1968. I remember most of those teachers names. Buxton was an ******* to me. Wish I could tell hom what I think of the way he embarrassed me in the changing rooms.
