More about this scene
In 1964 this beautiful and historic bridge, built in 1617, finally bent to the increase of traffic and was demolished and replaced with a modern concrete structure. Apart from the need for something stronger, it was believed that the small arches restricted the flow of the Ouse and led to the formation of ice during the winter. At the same time as the rebuilding, the osier beds on the northern side were taken up and Riverside Park was created. The white building is the Bridge Hotel, whilst on the south side are the Public Rooms, opened in 1855 to provide a place for public meetings and concerts.
