Westgate, dating back to the 14th century, provides access to the south-west corner of the old walled town. One of the finest and best preserved of these remaining fortifications, this was once the main gate to West Quay, which for many centuries was the only quay that could accommodate larger vessels, in the days when seawater reached this far inland.
