More about this scene

Shepley is situated to the south of Huddersfield. The imposing Bridge House, with a datestone of 1883 (left), was originally the Conservative Club; it was later used as a youth club, and was restored in 2003 and converted into business premises. Shepley's New Connection School (behind the photographer) was built in 1875. The Black Bull Inn is off to the right, and further left is the railway station on the Sheffield/Penistone line.

Hi, I am living in Ireland now. I spent many a good night in the Farmer's Boy pub, I was called 'Irish' by name, some day I hope to holiday in your lovely village.

Central Stores
The large 3-storey building to the right of centre, was the village grocery store at 91 Lane Head Road. My father purchased it in 1961 from Frank Armitage. He sold it in 1984 when he retired. At the rear were stables, groceries used to be delivered by horse drawn cart, but my father used a Ford Thames van, until in 1966 when he got a Ford Cortina estate car from H. W. Gill.  To the right of our shop was Copleys bakery.

Chip Shop
The building to the right of centre of this photo was Dyson's Fish & Chip Shop in the 1960s and 1970s. The caption says Main Road, but this road the A629 had several names. one was Penistone Road, but at this point it was known as Abbey Road South, before becoming Lane Head Road.

Sheply Village Center
This photo could have been taken from my bedroom window. I lived in Shepley from 1961 to 1983. On the left is The Black Bull pub, on the right is the Conservative club, which became the youth club.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
