More about this scene
Children are having a jolly time in the old baths, which were situated on the sea front near the Staincliffe Hotel. The baths were donated in 1914 by Sir William Gray, the famous local shipbuilder who had also founded the South Durham Steel and Iron Company in 1898. It is notable that the baths operated with salt water. They were demolished not long after this picture was taken.
