Built on the site of an early Saxon church, the present St Mary's has elements dating back to the 12th century.
In the 12th century Friern Barnet belonged to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and the church, notwithstanding extensive mid 19th-century additions, dates from around that time.
Because of its early date and association with St Piran, it was given protection from the elements and blown sands by the building of this rather unattractive shell.
The current building has a substantial element of Norman stonework dated c1150.
