More about this scene
Alderman Cunliffe OBE JP purchased the Manor House estate and gave it to the Corporation, but the Great War interrupted plans for development. It was eventually used for the site of the war memorial, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, architect of the Whitehall cenotaph. It was a popular choice and around 50,000 people attended the unveiling on 26 November 1922.
