More about this scene
The Bridge Inn is named after Victoria Bridge, built to span a tidal creek that ran across the line of Bolton Road; the bridge thus linked Bolton Road to the New Chester Road (the creek was eventually filled in and the bridge buried). The Bridge Inn was opened as a hotel in 1900, but traded initially on wholly temperance lines, which meant no alcohol. This state of affairs continued until a referendum was held amongst the villagers in 1903: they voted 4:1 in favour of a drinks licence for the building. Sensible people!
