The second tour starts in Oxted, where all is not as it seems. The original village, cut off by the by-pass, is to the west; while this photograph, taken from the junction with Easthill Road, shows the corner of Station Road West. In the 1920s the lord of the manor, Charles Hoskins Master, laid out the road to the railway station and built spectacularly convincing timber-framed shops with flats over. Caxton House on the right, now the Stamp Shop, is an example. Opposite is the 1890s hotel, replaced in the 1990s by blocks of flats, The Hoskins. Out of view to the left is Master Park, a public park established by Charles Master in 1923.
