Life In Northolt

A Memory of Northolt.

I moved to Northolt in 1970 with my step father, Alan Souster, my mother Gwen and my older sister Cindy. Our first home was Flat, Block 74, Dabbs Hill Lane. Below us in No.2 was Mr & Mrs Peg & their sons Andrew and Roy. In No.1 lived Martin and his ageing mother who used to sit on the balcony watching us play out back. No.3 was the Shillings and in No.6 lived the Jones'. It was at the start of the Summer Holidays and I was due to start St Vincent's Secondary Modern school in September. Four years later we moved to Wood End Estate which is still called Tin Town and I'm still living there 40 years later. I work in the local library. All my family, now flown the nest live within walking distance.

Hi
I lived in block 72!! I remember the Pegs, Andrew had learning difficulties if I remember rightly . I was born there in 1961 and moved out in 1980, so we were there at the same time. Do you remember anyone from my block?
I remember the cabin shop we used to go in there on way to school. I lived at southwell AVE.
If my memory serves you may have been in the previous block. My friend Celia used to live in block 64. As we would have backed out on to the same piece of green where the lines were I can remember a couple in wheelchairs that had a special ramp build out from their balcony. I can't remember their names though.
We lived in the other part of Northolt and used to catch the bus to the station and walk across the estate.. Bus was the 144 ,I think, and then moved out to Hillingdon Heath ,which involved trolley bus ,607 and latter the route master bus ,207. I was the youngest of my family to attend St. Vincent's , Elder sister Margaret then brother Peter and then me. Left the school in 1964 having upset the headmaster Dusty Miller, because I wouldn't get my haircut! Didn't do very well and had problems with teachers names of Pollard,(Science) and Fox(maths) both subjects my brother excelled at but I wasn't so good. Names of mates, Dennis Watson, Steve Rawlings lads I used to go fishing with on the Grand Union canal . Some of the girls I remember rather better , we had 3 Lindas, a Virginia and a Shirley all of whom I had a mad school boy crush on at one time or another. Left the school with no qualifications and shortly after joined the Royal Marines where I served for 24 years. Married living in Wales now with two grown up sons and four wonderful grandchildren . Hope someone read this who remembers me.
I started St Vincent's in September 1971 I think. In 1973 it joined up with Eliot's Green and another school and changed its name to Northolt High. I left in 1979 and lost contact with most of the people I knew. Joanne, Susan, Julie, David Walker, Martin Donaghue, Paul, David Yates, Russell Day, Jackie Hovarth, Celia, Malcolm, Christine, just to name a few that I hung out with after school. During school there was Gary Weir, Debbie, Violet, Gary Johnson, I never married but have been working in the library service for over 32 years. Many of the children I am reading to now are the offspring of those children I read to in the early years
My name is Celia and I was born and lived in block 84! 1959 - 1979.
Heidi Souster? I don't remember you???
I went to Vincent's which became Northolt High in my last year there.
I've just turned 60 and suddenly feel very nostalgic about Northolt. I went to Wood End Junior School and then Eliots Green. I used to walk from Newnham Gardens through Tin Town and then round the Racecourse to get to school. You could get a cigarette for a penny from the Cabin as I remember. My favourite teacher was Mr Barrett the PE teacher who put on great after school clubs and let us use the gym for basketball practice at breaks and lunchtime. Mrs Brown was the head teacher when Eliots Green and Vincent merged to become Northolt High.
We would have backed on to the same piece of common land out the back. Other than that I have to say I don't recall anyone from Block 72. But you may have known Celia who lived in Block 64. She was one of my best friends at school but did not play out much.
I was with Celia at school. We didn't hang out much out of school though. I remember she had a crush on our music teacher and would make up her face to impress him. We didn't see much of each other after the third year though as she chose to do the Secretarial course and I opted for Sciences
You might have known me as Heidi Boyle. My step father had my name changed in '73. I just commented on another post about a Celia which I assumed was 'my Celia'. She had a crush on our music teacher and we sort of drifted apart after we took our options at year 3/4
I'm not sure about Mr Barrett but I do remember one of my favourite teachers was the woodwork teacher (though I didn't take woodwork). He used to fascinate us all with tales from the bible, telling us the tales in Assembly. I never really liked Mrs Brown. We used to have to walk from one school to the next in the rain and then sit with our wet things at our backs because there was nowhere to hang them. We protested about getting a walkway but even now it has never emerged.
