More about this scene
The small village based around the manor of Rossington was enlarged to its west side once coal reserves had been found. The first pit was sunk in September 1912, and a 'New' Rossington was created for the colliers and their families. This small town was built in a radial pattern, and soon contained all the ingredients of urban life - the Co-op opened in 1915, the Royal Hotel (right) in 1921, and the Methodist church beyond it in 1928. A bus service came in 1922, and at the end of the road on the right, the Hippodrome Cinema entertained the town from 1929 until June 1962.
