More about this scene
A real sense of space is offered here in the market place. Masham market was granted trading rights from 1393. At one time 40,000 sheep could be traded in one day. Richmond complained about the competition, because Masham's market was always free of tolls. The coaching inn the King's Head (right) was also the tax and licence office until 1850. The church of St Mary dates from the 12th century, and outside is an even earlier carved Saxon cross. Also in the market place is the old grammar school, now holding primary classes. A stray German bomb fell here in 1941 after a raid on Teesside, and completely destroyed the White Bear Inn.
