More about this scene
A railway once crossed the road at the bottom of Berry Lane. Its opening in 1848 encouraged the development of the town and an expansion of the nearby quarries, whose fine stone was taken to build Liverpool Docks and the Harris Gallery at Preston. Behind the houses on the left is the 19th-century St Paul's Church.
