More about this scene
Designed by Manxman Robert Casement and commissioned in September 1854 to pump water from the Laxey mines, the wheel was in regular use until 1920. It is named Lady Isabella in honour of Lady Isabella Hope, wife of Governor Hope. When this picture was taken, the mining company charged visitors 3d each to use the observation platform. In 1854, Laxey Mining's £80 paid shares were trading at £1,200 each.
