More about this scene
Today we would be horrified to find beasts strolling around the town centre passing offices and private houses. Back in 1910, the locals knew that the cattle fair brought prosperity and variety to an industrial landscape. Dealers came from miles around, and welcomed the chance to converse in the nearby inns. The Beast Fairs were held twice a year, in May and November, here in Russell Street. At the close of business the fire brigade would be called to hose the streets.
