More about this scene
From Newstead Abbey the route heads four miles south to Hucknall, which also has Byronic associations: in this church Byron was buried in the family vault after his body had been brought home from Greece in 1824. St Mary Magdalene's church runs west from the Market Place and was heavily Victorianised and extended – the new chancel's foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Portland in 1887. The medieval tower is the oldest part of the church now, but the churchyard is a haven of green in the town centre.
