More about this scene

An attractive garden borders the river in front of the Swan Hotel. Since 1965 an extension to the hotel has replaced the low building beside the thatched house. The village staithe is on the right of the picture, with a row of Georgian houses behind. The Dutch gable of the shop front is an architectural feature often seen in this part of the country - a legacy of frequent migrations of Dutch farmers and wool merchants from the Netherlands. To the left of the hotel, the road apparently entering the water is a public slipway for private boats.

Sedges
We spent a glorious month each summer in the bungalow visible to the left of the Windmill House, 'Sedges'. It was owned by Mike and Betty Beardshaw. Time was spent rowing, swimming, fishing and in trips on the launch. I know we visited the windmill house but don't remember much about it except an impression of roundness and green paint.

The Half Moon Public House
This is not one of my memories but this is one of my father's, it was lovely to be told this and every time I pass this place it brings back my family history. My father and all 15 children were born in Horning and my father James Owen still lives there. Horning Summer Fete
The summer fetes in Horning bring back very good memories. I can remember one year that Mike Reid opened the fete, I can remember waiting outside the Swan public house with my mum to see him. There was also a tent that served teas /coffee and cakes made by the ladies of Horning and in the evening it turned into a disco for the younger people in the village, unfortunately I never went as I was not old enough, but I remember peeping through a gap in the tent one time to see what it was like.

Horning Post Office
My father, Herbert Stanley Cole, was the eldest son of the Postmaster, Albert Henry Cole.  He lived here from the early 1900s until about 1945.  His mother Victoria Kate Cole, ran the shop and they also operated the telephone switchboard 24 hours a day.   My uncle, Geoffrey Cole, was born in this building and my grandfather died there.  He was connecting a telephone call when he had a heart attack and died at the ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
