The pavements of Market Street were crowded with pram-pushing mothers shopping for the week's provisions. Another of the region's many woollen manufacturing towns, Heckmondwike still exhibits the same no-nonsense, down-to-earth air which characterises this part of the county.

My father Douglas Bolton was at Harold Woods in Heckmondwike as a personal & safety training officer. Can any one remember him he was there in the late Sixties
As a child I lived just a couple of hundred yards from that zebra crossing. Out of shot on the left was the Pavilion cinema - many happy memories spent there, though I had a stronger bond with the Palace, the other picture house in town where my grandmother worked as an usherette and for whom I delivered the weekly listings to several of the shops seen here in the farther distance: Freeman Hardy & Willis and Market ...see more
The shop on the right. 1-3 High Street was opened by my father, Arthur Tordoff in 1930. I was born at 47 Jeremy lane, in the front room, in 1947. The upstairs was a toy showroom and every Christmas we had a Grotto and Santa came.
