At its height in the 19th and early 20th century, Halifax was the greatest of the textile towns of West Yorkshire, a centre for woollen manufacture and clothing, larger even than Leeds or Bradford. The Victorian wealth of the town is shown in the fine buildings in this view of the main shopping street, with the Halifax Building Society, which started here, prominent on the right.
